Computer Science & Engineering

Computer Science & Engineering is a branch of engineering which focusses on the study and development of algorithms, data structures, programming languages and software engineering among other things. It equips students with the skills required to solve complex engineering problems and build softwares for the betterment of the society.

Application areas of computer science & engineering include networking and internet, cloud computing, design and development of programming languages, web application development, application development for other engineering fields, banking and finance, software development for consumer devices, automobiles, aircrafts etc.

The study of computer science and engineering develops a strong reasoning and analytical ability in the students. Computer Science & Engineering graduates may pursue higher studies in computation theory, information theory, cryptography etc.

The computer science and engineering also covers deep learning-based image processing techniques which is very much essential for manufacturing autonomous vehicles.

Computer Science & Engineering is a four year programme comprising eight semesters. Typically students learn 3-4 programming language courses, 3-4 courses on core computer science like Operating Systems, Computer Networks, Theory of Computing, Analysis & Design of Algorithms, 1-3 hardware related courses like Microcontrollers, IoT. Students also learn about cutting edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, DevOps.

Any engineering application requires the involvement of engineers from many engineering disciplines like Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering. At MRIT we encourage the students to get interdisciplinary knowledge by utilising the open elective courses in various other engineering disciplines.

The enthusiastic team of faculty members at the Computer Science & Engineering department lead by Dr. Mahesha Y strives to instill in students the original thinking, exploratory approach to learning from an early stage. The faculty members as mentors guide the students to realise their goals and achieve excellence in their chosen areas. The mentoring system at MRIT ensures that the faculty members interact with the students regularly and identify the strengths and weaknesses of the students.

HOD’s Profile

Dr. Lakshmi Durga currently serves as the Head of the Computer Science and Engineering Department at Mysuru Royal Institute of Technology, since September 2024. With an impressive career spanning over 22 years, Dr. Lakshmi has contributed significantly to academia in various capacities, including as Head of Department and Associate Professor at reputed engineering institutions.

Dr. Lakshmi holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering from Rao Bahadur Y. Mahabaleswarappa Engineering College,[Formerly Vijayanagar Engineering College], Bellary (affiliated with Gulbarga University), and a Master of Technology in Computer Network Engineering from BITM, Bellary (affiliated with VTU, Belagavi). She earned her Ph.D. in the Faculty of Computer & Information Sciences from VTU Belagavi, under the guidance of Dr. Deepu R., Professor of CSE at PES University, Bangalore. Her Ph.D. thesis, titled “Automating Analysis of Handwritten Documents for Graphotherapy,” reflects her expertise in this niche field. She is also a certified graphotherapist.

She has made significant contributions to research, including filing a patent for a “Graphotherapy-Based Handwriting Analysis System with Structural and Character Features Extraction” in 2021, which was published in 2022. Additionally, she has published five international journal papers indexed in SCOPUS, two international conference papers under IEEE and Springer, and two papers in national conferences.

Throughout her career, she has organized numerous academic and technical events, including the state-level intercollegiate coding competition and the Computer Society of India Region-V Student Convention. She has also played key roles in institutional committees focused on anti-ragging, mentoring, exam conduction, placements, and NBA accreditation.

Dr. Lakshmi’s teaching portfolio covers a broad range of subjects, including Python, Web Programming, Unix and Shell Programming, Data Structures, Computer Networks, Microprocessors, and various advanced topics such as Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Distributed Operating Systems. Her research interests lie in image processing, computer vision, and machine learning.

Her dedication to education, research, and leadership makes her a valuable asset to the Mysuru Royal Institute of Technology.
