CIVIL ENGINEERING

The Foundation of Civilization.

Civil engineering is a core branch of engineering that deals with the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment.

This includes public works such as roads, bridges, canals, dams, airports, sewage systems, and railways.

It is considered one of the oldest engineering disciplines, with its roots tracing back to ancient civilizations.

About the Department

MRIT offers a four-year undergraduate Bachelor of Engineering Program in Civil Engineering Civil engineering is the application of physical and scientific principles for the design, development and maintenance of both the constructed and the naturally built environment.

This includes infrastructure such as airports, bridges, buildings, canals, dams, pipelines, power plants, railways, roads, sewage systems, and more.

Civil engineering projects can come through the public sector, from government agencies, or through the private sector, and can be either large or small in scale, with civil engineers working in fields such as planning, budgeting, project and asset management, research, analysis, and more.

Civil engineering systems is a discipline that promotes the use of systems thinking to manage complexity and change in civil engineering within its wider public context. It posits that the proper development of civil engineering infrastructure requires a holistic, coherent understanding of the relationships between all of the important factors that contribute to successful projects while at the same time emphasising the importance of attention to technical detail.

Its purpose is to help integrate the entire civil engineering project life cycle from conception, through planning, designing, making, operating to decommissioning.

VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT

“To produce innovative and research-driven Civil engineers with a strong social conscience to address real-world challenges”

MISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT

  1. To provide a solid knowledge base and consultancy services to the community in all areas of civil engineering.
  2. To encourage innovative and creative thinking in emerging civil engineers to tackle future challenges.
  3. To equip civil engineering students with a robust foundation for pursuing higher education and research.
  4. To encourage lifelong learning by fostering a sense of social and ethical responsibilities.

Career Opportunities

Key Career Opportunities in Civil Engineering

  • Civil Engineer: Civil engineers are responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, and buildings.
  • They analyze survey reports and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Surveyor: Surveyors measure and map land boundaries, providing essential data for construction projects.
  • They prepare maps and verify property records.
  • Project Engineer: Project engineers oversee specific projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
  • They coordinate between different teams and manage resources effectively.
  • Environmental Engineer: These engineers focus on projects that improve environmental quality, such as waste management and pollution control.
  • They work on sustainable design practices.
  • Geotechnical Engineer: Specializing in soil and rock mechanics, geotechnical engineers
  • Assess ground conditions for construction projects, ensuring stability and safety.
  • Transportation Engineer: Transportation engineers design and improve transportation systems, including highways, railways, and airports,
  • To enhance mobility and safety.
  • Structural Engineer: Structural engineers design and analyze structures to ensure they can withstand various loads and forces.
  • They play a crucial role in the safety and durability of buildings and bridges.
  • Construction Manager: These professionals oversee construction sites, managing budgets, schedules, and teams.
